Cricut Design Space. This web app is used for crafters for multiple uses. You can create designs to print, cut, and color among the many other uses it has. Made for all crafters, from beginners to the most experienced.
Usability
This free app with in-app purchase ability lets you create any project you can imagine. The app can be found on desktop, laptop, tablet, and mobile devices. It is somewhat user-friendly, as a beginner it is advised to view tutorials to make it easier to understand what you can and cannot do. It features ways to add images, shapes, and text. You can edit your saved projects. You can either cut, draw or print then cut. You can upload any image of your choosing, either from your photo library or any image from their library. There are many fonts to choose from in their library. You can save your projects in the cloud to access them in any device you use. You can purchase/subscribe to the Cricut Access for unlimited use of any images, fonts, or projects in the Cricut library.
Design
Once the app is downloaded, register and sign in. Once logged in, connect your Cricut machine using Bluetooth. Design a new project or go through all the images and designs to use a premade one. On the canvas, you can choose to upload an image or use one from the library. Add shapes and text to your project. There are multiple icons on the top to choose if you want a basic cut, draw, or print then cut. Arrange images, flip, offset, create stickers, warp, change size, rotate, or change positions. Once you finish your project click the Make button and it will ask to save your project. The next page that comes up will be the mat with the image to print then cut or draw if that’s what was chosen. Your Cricut will start and finish the project.
Functionality
The functionality is pretty basic but has a lot of complex functions too. For example, when cutting designs, the backgrounds of images may need to be cleaned up. SVGs are the easiest images to use but you may also need to use a different app to convert images to SVG and cleanup images to have crisp lines. The app itself can sometimes freeze or have slow loading times. The functionality differs from device to device because some functions may not be available on some devices. Some features and design features may be locked and need a subscription to use.
Recommendations
- Open some of the more basic functions up for use without subscription allowing users to create without restrictions.
- When uploading images add the automatic background remover instead of having to subscribe to make it easier for users instead of having to use a different free app to remove it and then upload.
- Reduce monthly subscriptions to encourage more users to use Cricut Access.
